In the entire Old Testament, the Major and Minor Prophets provide some of the richest foreshadowing and visions of Christ. The Major and Minor prophets are essential readings if you want to learn more about the Messiah and the occasions that preceded and prophesied his arrival.

God’s first mention of a prophet in Deuteronomy 18:18-19 “I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him. I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name.”

List of the Major and Minor Prophets

Before we delve deeper into this, here is the list of major and minor prophets who have been mentioned in the Bible.

The Four Major Prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel.

The Twelve Minor Prophets: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi.

How Did Prophets Become Prophets?

Although the Bible is silent on how prophets became prophets. However, there are other instances where the Lord communicated his will through visions rather than an audible or internal voice (1 Samuel 3:1, 15; 2 Samuel 7:17; Isaiah 1:1; Ezekiel 11:24), dreams, or other means (Numbers 12:6).

Christ also served by God’s word as a priest, prophet, and king. The term major and minor added to the ‘prophets’ are merely used by the Bible to categorize the Old Testament prophetic books.

The Relationship Between Major and Minor Prophets

Typically, Christians don’t read or study the Major or Minor Prophets very often. This is because the language of the prophets is challenging and uncommon among us. The danger of either God’s people straying or the consequences of rejecting God are constantly warned against.

However, each book contains important facts that can be learnt. For instance, Micah and Isaiah both contain prophecies about the birth of Christ. Then, in the writings of Zachariah, Ezekiel, and Daniel, we may learn about how Jesus will make His appearance when he finally comes back.
